Values
Presenting our #RethinkTheBias series where we share stories of courage from our associates. Coming up next is the story of Sandeep Narsing Somwanshi in the series.
In 2007, my life took a transformative turn when I was working at a mall in Lonavala. It was a day marked by rain and chance, a day that would lead me on an unexpected journey. As I went about my duties, I stumbled upon an elderly couple caught in the downpour, seeking refuge from the unforgiving weather. Without a second thought, I rushed to their aid, offering my umbrella as a shield from the rain’s assault.
What struck them, and perhaps even more surprising to me, was the revelation that I am a person with speech and hearing impairment. At that moment, our worlds collided, and a profound connection was formed. Their faces lit up with gratitude for my simple act of kindness, and they made a choice that would forever alter the course of my life.
With genuine warmth in their hearts, they decided to pay forward the kindness I had shown them. They introduced me to an empathetic and understanding HR representative at Club Mahindra, Tungi. It was here that I began a new chapter in my life, one defined by inclusivity and unwavering support. Today, I stand with pride as a front-desk associate at Club Mahindra, Tungi, a testament to the power of a company that values diversity and creates an environment where every individual can thrive.
But my journey doesn't solely belong to me, it's a reflection of the support and love that surrounds me. I hail from a very supportive family, led by my father, a school principal who instilled in me the values of patience and resilience. These virtues became my armour, shielding me from the storms I faced in a world that sometimes didn't understand.
Despite the challenges and bullying I endured at school, my family's unwavering support was my anchor, propelling me to rise above adversity. Their love and encouragement were the wind beneath my wings, allowing me to soar to new heights.
I am immensely grateful for the opportunities I have been given at work to learn and grow, but the path to inclusivity doesn't end here. To make the journey smoother for associates like me, organizations should take proactive steps. These include creating training videos with sign language interpreters and embracing assistive technology to ensure that every individual, regardless of their abilities, can access the same opportunities and pursue their dreams.
This is not just my story, it's a story of kindness, resilience, and the transformative power of inclusivity. It's a story that reminds us that when we stand together, regardless of our differences, we can create a world where everyone has the chance to shine."
